And, unless you liked the run n’ gun stages, it truly has something for everyone: because they’ve been justifiably ignored for Cuphead’s last hurrah. After five long years, Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course, has finally come along to top off the original release. Studio MDHR’s display of patience is not only reflected in their development process but in the final product as well. Hellish QuartĪnnounced back in 2018 and originally slated for a 2019 release, the DLC’s development suffered from numerous delays due to the mental stress on its small development team and, later, complications related to the covid-19 pandemic.

It’s a relief, then, that its long-awaited DLC, “Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course,” not only builds upon the original but leaves your palate exhilarated and inspires confidence that the Michelin star chef who wowed you the first time didn’t just get lucky. There are expectations now, more so than there were when the run-and-gun shooter’s release shook the gaming world in 2017, and fans have been eager to see if the developer is going to be a one-hit-wonder. Studio MDHR’s debut title, “Cuphead,” sold millions of copies, won numerous awards, reinvigorated a popular game genre and blossomed into its own Netflix series. Some of the most spectacular 2D action-platformer bosses I’ve ever faced. Chalice is a fairly significant departure, especially for someone like me who has played the original campaign so many times. In the meantime, there’s a temporary fix for her not-being-alive problem: the Astral Cookie, a new charm that can be equipped to play as Ms.

Chalice, Cuphead, and Mugman must collect the ingredients for the Wondertart from the bosses scattered across Inkwell Isle IV. The Legendary Chalice, a ghost who granted players Super Arts abilities in the main campaign, wants to come back to life. Chalice is a game-changer in The Delicious Last Course, so it’s not too surprising that the DLC’s story is centered around her. Chalice and multiple interesting new weapons/charms, The Delicious Last Course is a triumph that expands on the base game in clever ways while also improving the original campaign itself. Coupled with a creative new playable character in Ms. More than just visually impressive, though, the new boss fights are more exciting, dynamic, and mechanically diverse. The level of detail on display in the DLC’s handful of boss fights is simply mind-boggling. Somehow, Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course easily surpasses the pure artistic beauty of the base game. I still find new visual flourishes that I had never noticed before–split-second facial animations and the tiniest of details on the myriad objects and projectiles that fill the stages of frantic boss fights. I’ve played through Cuphead dozens of times over the past five years, and each time I appreciate its hand-drawn artistry even more. A year into the pandemic, game developers reflect on burnout, mental health and avoiding crunch. The story obviously isn’t the reason anyone is here, but it’s nonetheless charmingly told with quick cutscenes and more of the outstanding art that fans have come to expect. The catch, of course, is that they must collect its ingredients by defeating the powerful foes that are guarding them. To that end, Cuphead and his pal Mugman head towards a brand new isle where they’re told that Chef Saltbaker, the greatest chef in the land, is able to create a Wondertart that can permanently grant Ms. Chalice, a character who appeared in the main game only as a super-move-granting spirit, a real living and breathing cup person. The Delicious Last Course is all about making Ms.
